At ReachOut Arts, we love bringing history to life, and the Tudor period in England is one of the most fascinating times to explore.
Full of captivating characters, amazing events, and strange customs, the Tudors offer endless opportunities for discovery and learning. Our Tudor workshops are designed to engage and educate children through fun, interactive activities.
Here are some weird and wonderful facts about the Tudors that always make kids giggle or gasp during our workshops.
Tudor Toilets: The Groom of the Stool
Did you know that King Henry VIII had a special servant called the “Groom of the Stool” whose job was to help him use the toilet? This servant was very important and trusted, spending a lot of time with the king.
Weird Food the Tudors Enjoyed
The Tudors had some unusual tastes by today's standards. They enjoyed delicacies like roasted peacock, swan, and even porpoise! They also loved sweet treats like marzipan and marchpane, made from sugar and almonds.
What Did the Tudors Wear?
Tudor fashion was all about standing out. Rich people wore bright colours and luxurious fabrics. Men often wore a codpiece, a padded piece of fabric to show off their wealth and status, while women wore farthingales, which were big, hoop-like skirts. In our workshops, children get a hands-on experience with wool spinning, just like in Tudor times!
Elizabeth I’s Makeup
Queen Elizabeth I loved wearing makeup, but it wasn’t like what we use today. She used a mixture called “Venetian ceruse,” made from white lead and vinegar. It made her skin look pale but was very bad for her health.
Tudor Weapons and Entertainment
The Tudors loved dangerous sports and entertainment. Jousting, where knights on horses tried to knock each other off with lances, was very popular. They also enjoyed bear-baiting, where a bear was tied to a post, and dogs were set upon it. When we reveal our ‘Danger Table’ with replica weapons, the children are always enthusiastic and excited to learn more!
